Interview With Darwin, Boat Captain Assistant at Dressel Divers Playa del Carmen

Darwin has been working at Dressel Divers Playa del Carmen since 2015, as a boat captain assistant. He is a kind person and always with a smile on his face. Someone who inspires so much confidence and positivity that he is even able to show turtles and incredible seascapes to a child who has never swum in the sea before.

Today we visited him in Playa del Carmen to get to know him a little better. He has told us about his experience working with Dressel, his best anecdotes with clients and his favorite hobbies.

1. Why did you choose this career/job? 

I knew that my skills would be a good fit for this job and I was very excited to have the opportunity to learn and advance.

 

2.  How long have you been working for Dressel Divers?

7 years and 2 months.

 

3. What are your main responsibilities/tasks?

I have the responsibility to protect and care for each person who boards the boat, for both them and myself. Similar is my responsibility to care for and maintain the boat to avoid delays in the operation as well as the task of helping and working as a team.

 

4. What qualities do you think a person with your job needs to be successful?

Having the ability to solve problems, respect, know how to communicate, and be committed to successfully carrying out our tasks.

5. What do you like most about your job?

Seeing the satisfaction of divers and snorkeling clients after doing an activity with us.

 

6. Do you have any noteworthy mannerisms or rituals in your work?

Being always positive, friendly, and always smiling helps me feel more confident at work.

 

7. What accomplishment are you most proud of working for Dressel Divers?

The experience and growth that I have been improving every year.

8. What features and opportunities made you choose to work with this company in particular?

I have the characteristic of being a positive person and the company gives me the chance to grow and learn.

 

9. What is your most memorable moment here in Dressel Divers?

Being a sailor after being promoted to captain and in addition to certifying myself as a diver.

 

10. Why would you recommend Dressel Divers to others looking for a job?

I would recommend it because at Dressel Divers we have the opportunity to grow and gain experience in different areas.

Diving is my main hobby, getting to know the different dive sites, and appreciating the colors and the amazing marine life.

 11. What has been the greatest compliment you have received from a client?

That I was able to convince a 7-year-old to snorkel and show him turtles and rays during the time spent in the water. Upon finishing and reaching the base, his mother told me that his son was autistic and that it was the first time he had entered the open water and he felt very confident and safe with me, they congratulated me and thanked me for doing something that seemed impossible.

 

12. What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to take up a job as a boat captain assistant, to be as good as you are?

Being responsible, having a positive attitude, being kind, working as a team, learning new things, and striving to do your best.

 

13. What are your other hobbies? What do you do on your days off here in Playa del Carmen?

Diving is my main hobby, getting to know the different dive sites, and appreciating the colors and the amazing marine life.

 

14. Do you also dive and snorkel?  

Yes, I am a snorkel guide and also a certified diver (rescue diver) 😁
