PAPUA NEW GUINEA LIVEABOARD DIVING

While PNG / PAPUA NEW GUINEA liveaboard diving you may unwittingly end up admiring some yet undiscovered marine species, because that is how pristine this place really is.  Pretty much everything can be seen here, even that which marine biologist still do not know exists. And then there is the usual pelagic magic, very unusual except when liveaboard diving places like Papua New Guinea, such as schools of hammerheads that seem on vacation just like you and love to draw your attention away from other PNG protagonists such as the numerous whale sharks, mantas, dolphins, and pilot whales.

Made up of over 600 jungle-covered volcanic islands, all surrounded by crystal clear waters, Papua New Guinea is part of the famous Coral Triangle, defined by marine biologists to be one of the most oceanic biodiverse hotspots in the world. So, there is a reason the phrase “more fish than water” is typical of Papua New Guinea liveaboard diving. The atolls, walls, barrier reefs, WWII wrecks, apart from giving a perfect wide-angle décor for this record-breaking amount of marine life, logically are also a mecca for macro underwater photographers, not least because of the world-class muck dives.

Muck is defined as dirt, rubbish, or waste matter, so why would anyone want to go halfway around the globe to go muck diving? Basically, because Papua New Guinea liveaboard diving itineraries include some of the world’s best ocean muck: sediment and coral skeleton bottom substrate, in which to meet unusual, exotic, and juvenile organisms and myriad other bizarre critters, such as the rare pygmy seahorses and mantis shrimp. In fact, the term muck diving was first coined in Papua New Guinea itself by Bob Halstead to describe diving off the Milne Bay beaches made up of black volcanic sand.  So, add some muck to your bucket list.

PAPUA NUEVA GUINEA LIVEABOARD DIVING – QUALITY SELECTS

Papua New Guinea liveaboard diving is adventurous and exploratory in plankton rich waters that draw impressive amounts of pelagic ocean creatures along towering seamounts and reef walls that drop off into blue abysses. Often you will be the only divers on sites that arguably offer the best liveaboard diving venue in the Pacific with an amazing variety of hard and soft corrals giving wonderful habitat to countless tropical fish and tiny invertebrates. To top it all up, there is no shortage on corral encrusted WWII Japanese and Allied Force battleship and plane wrecks either.

For this amazing Papua New Guinea liveaboard diving safari,  we recommend the same vessel we suggest for the Solomon Islands, although each is a distinct trip. The vessels’ name makes reference to both destinations as it operates in both and even offers a separate transit trip in between them as additional itinerary for the really intrepid divers, wanting to dive into the really unknown. With very ample lounge, dining area and sun deck you will feel totally at ease. The dive deck installations are very impressive also, with toilets, showers, rinse bins, equipment stations and facilities for photography and filming equipment.

So, in spite of being very popular with highly experienced divers, Papua New Guinea liveaboard diving is also very accessible to others and makes for a great first pacific liveaboard experience.  So, there is never an excuse to postpone a Papua New Guinea liveaboard. If you are a diver you are ready for it.
