Stony Corals: The Diver’s Guide to Hard Corals, Species & Identification

But at some point, you start looking closer. You hover over the reef wall and ask yourself: “What exactly is that brain-shaped structure? Is that live coral or just rock? Why does that one look like a moose’s antlers?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, you’ve just crossed the line from being a spectator to becoming an ocean observer. And to understand the reef, there’s one essential starting point: stony corals.

1. What Are Stony Corals?

To answer directly: stony corals (also called hard corals) are colonial marine animals belonging to the order Scleractinia that secrete a rigid skeleton of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Each colony is made up of thousands of tiny individual animals called polyps. Over years, and centuries, the accumulation of these stony skeletons builds the physical structure that coral reefs around the world are built on.

Despite what many people think, a stony coral is not a plant or a rock. It’s an animal (a cnidarian), and, believe it or not, it’s much more closely related, evolutionarily, to jellyfish and sea anemones than to sea sponges.

  • Each individual polyp looks like a miniature sea anemone, just 0.04–0.12 in (1–3 mm) in diameter in most species.

Shallow-water stony corals host millions of microscopic single-celled algae called zooxanthellae (family Symbiodiniaceae) within their own tissue. This relationship is a textbook example of mutualism:

  • What the coral provides: a protected home, plus access to carbon dioxide (CO2) and inorganic nutrients the polyp produces while metabolizing its food.
  • What the algae provides: through photosynthesis, zooxanthellae produce sugars, glucose, and amino acids, transferring up to 90% of that energy directly to the coral. This extra energy boost is what allows the stony coral to secrete calcium carbonate at a rapid pace.

Nighttime Feeding: The Reef’s Hunters

But stony corals don’t live on sunlight alone, they’re also predators. At night, as light fades, the reef transforms. Polyps extend their tentacles, armed with stinging cells called nematocysts, to capture zooplankton and small organic particles drifting through the water column.

These have secondary branches splitting off from a central trunk or base. They grow fast and create true underwater “jungles” that serve as nurseries for juvenile fish.

5. Stony Coral Species: Which Ones Might Divers See?

If you dive in the Caribbean, Mexico, Cozumel, or the Riviera Maya, these are some of the most iconic and important stony coral species you’re likely to encounter:

Elkhorn Coral (Acropora palmata)

  • Growth form: Flat branching.
  • Where to find it: In very shallow reef-crest zones, 1.6–16 ft (0.5–5 m) deep, exposed to breaking waves.
  • Visual ID: Its branches are wide, flattened, and horizontal, resembling a moose’s antlers. It’s a key species for protecting coastlines from storms and hurricanes.

Staghorn Coral (Acropora cervicornis)

  • Growth form: Cylindrical branching.

  • Trapezia crabs: tiny crustaceans that live among the branches of Acropora corals. In exchange for shelter, these crabs actively defend the coral against predators like the crown-of-thorns sea star.
  • Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus giganteus): those tiny, brightly colored spirals that vanish in a split second when your shadow passes over them aren’t sitting on top of the rock, they’re embedded directly inside the stony coral’s calcareous skeleton.

7. Why Are Stony Corals Important & Are They in Danger?

Stony corals are the architects of the ocean. Although reefs cover less than 0.1% of the seafloor, they’re home to more than 25% of all known marine species. They also protect coastlines from erosion by reducing wave energy by more than 90%, and they support the economy and food supply of millions of people through tourism and sustainable fishing.

However, stony corals do face threats:

  1. Coral Bleaching: rising water temperatures caused by climate change stress the coral and cause it to expel its zooxanthellae. Without its symbiotic algae, the tissue becomes transparent, revealing the white skeleton.
  2. Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD): known in English as Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, this disease destroys living tissue, leaving the white skeleton exposed.
  3. Ocean Acidification: excess CO2 dissolved in the water reduces the availability of carbonate ions, making it harder for polyps to build their rigid skeleton.

8. How Can Divers Protect Stony Corals?

As a diver, your behavior underwater makes a direct difference. Touching a stony coral, brushing it with your fins, or resting on it breaks the delicate mucus layer that protects the polyp, opening the door to infections and fatal diseases.

  1. Perfect your buoyancy: before getting close to the bottom to take a photo or look at a critter, adjust your BCD and hold neutral buoyancy. If you need to adjust your weighting, do it at the start of the dive.
  2. Use the frog kick: the traditional flutter kick directs water flow downward, stirring up sediment that settles on stony corals and smothers their polyps. The frog kick directs propulsion backward and upward, protecting the reef.
  3. Streamline your gear: keep your gauge console, octopus, and dive light tucked in and close to your body. A dangling console acts like a wrecking ball, destroying years of a stony coral’s growth in an instant.
  4. Listen to the dive briefing: briefings aren’t just a formality. Studies have shown that divers who pay attention to an environmental briefing before the dive make dramatically fewer accidental contacts with the reef during the dive.
